About Photography, and Israel too

Mon May 9, 2005, 12:27 AM
I think it's time i say a few words about photography, and about my homeland, Israel. What the two have in common? I'll explain...

I get alot of comments regarding the "Beautiful places i get to photograph", "I wish i could be in these places and photograph". Regardless the beauty of these places, the secret of photography is not the landscape. It sure helps, but it's not the key.

You know, every place on the face of the planet have been photographed before.
If you take a straight shot, like a postcard, you aren't much of a photographer, no matter how beautiful the picture turns out. The art of photography is not in the mechinical action, but in the process of thought that leads you to the photograph. The expression, the style, the point of view, the angle, the use of light and shadow, etc...
A group of photographers join together in one place, take 30 pictures each, and no picture will look alike. Why?
All the reason i mentioned.

What's my point?
Oh, a good thing you asked, i almost forgot.
The secret to good photography is not the place you leave in.
An empty room can be great frames for a good photographer, just as the beautiful Taj Mahal. Different, but just as impressive.

I shoot a lot of urban photography, cause i live in the city. If i was to live in the country, I'm sure my photographs would have shown nuch more landscape. But my style, and point of view, and my search for expression, concept, and abstract, would have be as obvies in any king of category.

And what has that to do with Israel?
Another good question.. well done!
Israel is a beautiful place, and a sureal place to live in.
Many people imagine Israel in a kind of a war zone. Well, Israel is in war, but as hard as it is to imagine, we live our everyday life.
Israel is very small in size, but we have here a small desert, a small metropolin, a small green country side. Israel is famous for the Holy Jerusalem that is secret to all religions, The Dead sea that is lowest place on the face of the earth, The kinneret where Jesus walked on water, Haifa with the Bahai Shrine.
With all these places I do have alot to photo, and it is an advantge.
But..
I have very little intrest in photographing the obvies, in taking "tourist" shots, capturing postcards of these places.
Even if i take pictures of these places, I'll try to do it differently.
I might as well be almost anywhere else in the world as a photographer.
My prespective is to capture expression.

My realization:
Finally....
I think we all can do that as photographers, regardless of where we are, or live.
Think of our point of view, and not of the view itself.

Yours, G

Expression is life... Life is art.

I'll sign that.

I live in Croatia, a place that is geographically blessed with most views one can imagine. Flat lands in the east, small hills in the centre, big mountains to the west and finally one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. Also, climate is also amazing - hot summers, and cold snowy winters. I just wish I can afford to travel to photograph all that. Will do one day. But if I was living in a desert, I'm sure I'd never run out of stuff to photograph.

Nice words G.

Buying a Nikon doesn't make you a photographer.
It makes you a Nikon owner. [link]

Very true...its the sense and perspective....what I like to call a person's individuality - something that defines him/her just as his mannerisms, characteristics, appearance and language does.

Everyone has it, every single life-form that has a thought process to back his/her actions. However, its just that some know about it and know how to cultivate and realize it more than many others - we see such creatures everywhere, as scientists, as artists, as soldiers, as writers, as doctors (and as photographers of course :)) Also dogs, dolphins, horses, eagles, ........

So, in a sense, I'd say every creature is an artist ! :hmm: interesting! :)

i could not agree more with you in this one =)

not everybody with a camera can be a good photographer.

photography is not really about places.. it's the ways you see things in different ways. :)

yes,u are so right, the key to good photographing is to take shots with ur own vision, not like u see it all the time.originality and style,ur own style.if i'm home i can think about a photo like 2 houres, like how i would do it,what angle,...offcource with landscape photography u don't have so much options, but u can compose a photo very different as any other shot from the same place.

words that every creative person should take to heart, not just photographers. very inspiring. often times its not just the art but the artist. at any rate, please keep the camera going. i wish to someday see the world in whole... but until that day, i shall use your pictures as gateways. later. :)

I live in the UK .. which (as I'm sure most people know) is one of the most boring places in the world... we do sometimes get the most spectacular skies though :) ... I've heard some people say that photography doesn't count as an art... people who believe that think that just pointing and shooting is photography...

I'm not an artist or photographer myself. I'm your average woman with an appreciation for art that is moving and has depth. I just looked through your entire gallery, and was moved by your gift. How amazing that you bring such beauty to even the dark.
