Description

In this game of life
The objective is not to knock down the king
The objective is to keep standing strong
Participating in this game of chess
Until it's time to go into the light

In this game of life
You are a winner just by playing the game
And letting others play it too
Knocking down others will get you closer to the end
Until it's time to go into the light

In this game of life
Some choose to go only in straight lines
Some move only in little steps
Some run shortcuts from one place to the next
Until it's time to go into the light

In this game of life
You make decisions and enter the doors you choose
Moving when it's your time to go
You are a loser only if you seek to win the game
Until it's time to go into the light

Taken in the Austrian Hospice, 3rd floor, 37 Via Dolorosa, Near Damascus Gate, Jerusalem, Israel
This large building, located in the Muslim Quarter between the Damascus and Lions' Gates, was built in 1857 and served as a hospital from 1948 to 1985.
In recent years it was restored to its original use as a hostel for pilgrims and visitors to Jerusalem. Beautifully managed and renovated, the Austrian Hospice's gardens, terraces, fabulous rooftop vistas of the Old City

This picture was so good that I had to do a double take and give it a Critique. This picture has so many deep elements within it I don't even know where to begin. First off I too do see life as a chess game, though your words shouldn't be so elaborated. Not for a piece as deep as this. I'd take all those words off of there and let the viewer describe the piece as they see fit. It's deep, subversive, eerie, and the bent view tells a story of displacement or a feeling of fear to where you don't know where you are. The mysterious individual that awaits you in the distance. Who could this be and what role does he play in your path of life. Many checkered trials of tribulation await on the stepping blocks to lead to him. The glare illuminates all the while keeping me distracted. What is in the back of him? Is it a TV? Could this be a portal to another world or a video of your future. Maybe your end.
This is a great piece, but, I'd fill it with more of questions than an explanation. It kills the eerie and mysterious feel of it almost instantly. Taking away its elements of interest that it displays and utilizes all too well. Way more than other pieces of work.
The Vision: is "Surreal"
The Originality: is "On Par"
The Technique: is "Well Done and Utilized"
The Impact: is "Deep and Striking" though it could have been tweaked a bit to give that (surreal/eerie) type of feeling found in a lot of Joshua Hoffine's works, but, other than that, this is excellent work.
